Nothing beats the aroma of a freshly baked apple pie, and making one from scratch is easier than you think. This classic dessert is perfect for any occasion, and this recipe will have your taste buds singing!

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water
  • 8 cups thinly sliced and peeled apples
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Begin by making the crust. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your hands to work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together in a ball. Divide the dough in half and flatten each into a disk. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 375°F. On a floured surface, roll out one of the chilled dough disks into a 12-inch circle. Transfer to a 9-inch pie dish and trim the edges. In a large bowl, mix together the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared crust and dot with butter.

Roll out the second chilled dough disk into a 12-inch circle. Cut into strips and arrange over the top of the apple filling in a lattice pattern. Brush the beaten egg over the top of the crust and sprinkle with sugar.

Bake the pie for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Allow the pie to cool for at least 20 minutes before serving.
