Challah bread is a traditional Jewish bread that is delicious and easy to make at home. Follow these simple steps for a perfect loaf every time!
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 1 egg yolk
- 1/4 cup honey
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt. In a separate small mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let sit for 5 minutes.
Next, add the vegetable oil, eggs, egg yolk, and honey to the yeast mixture and whisk until well combined. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour. After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 3 equal parts. Roll each part into a long rope and braid the ropes together. Place the braided loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the top of the loaf with an egg wash made from 1 beaten egg and 1 tablespoon of water. Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, until it is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
