Gumbo Recipe: A Classic Southern Dish with Sausage, Chicken, Okra, and Rice

Gumbo is a flavorful and hearty stew that originated in Southern Louisiana. This dish is typically made with a mix of meats, vegetables, and spices, and is served over a bed of rice. Here's how to make your own delicious gumbo at home:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound sausage, sliced
  • 1 pound chicken, diced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can diced tomatoes (14.5 oz)
  • 1 can tomato sauce (8 oz)
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 pound okra, sliced
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 cups cooked rice

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook the sausage over medium-high heat until browned. Remove the sausage and set aside.
  2. Add the chicken to the pot and cook until browned. Remove the chicken and set aside with the sausage.
  3. Add the onion, green bell pepper, celery, and garlic to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken broth, okra, thyme, and bay leaves to the pot. Stir to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes.
  6. Add the sausage and chicken back to the pot and simmer for an additional 15 minutes.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Serve the gumbo over a bed of cooked rice.
