Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup boiling water

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, until just combined.
  6. In a small bowl, mix together the cocoa powder and boiling water until smooth.
  7. Take 1/3 of the batter and mix it with the cocoa mixture.
  8. Place a spoonful of the vanilla batter into the prepared loaf pan, followed by a spoonful of the chocolate batter. Continue alternating spoonfuls of vanilla and chocolate batter until all the batter is used up.
  9. Using a skewer, gently swirl the batter to create a marbled effect.
  10. Bake for 60-70 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  11. Cool the cake in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove it from the pan and place it on a wire rack to cool completely.
